Brainwave Entrainment is the newest drug free way to help ourselves to go to sleep. Brainwave Entrainment works by calming the mind to help us reach a relaxed state which enables us to fall asleep naturally.

Brainwave Entrainment is not new. in fact our ancestors used it in their dances and rituals. They used drums and other types of rhythmic instruments like rattles to create beats which would have a certain effect on those listening.

binaural beats mp3A very fast beat would whip people into a frenzy to prepare them for battle or any activity which required a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Other slower beats would calm people down almost to a dreamlike meditative state necessary for healing or to implant ideas into the subconscious minds of the listeners.

When we’re awake we are mainly in a state of beta, measured at 15-40 cycles per second, which is alertness and even agitation. When we relax our brainwaves are predominately alpha, measured at 9-14 cycles per second, a state of mental calm and relaxed focus. These waves can be measured on an EEG machine which show as a person relaxes, their brainwaves become slower and further apart.

As the relaxation continues the brainwaves further slow down to theta, (5-8 cycles per second) state of drowsiness and light sleep and finally delta (1.5-4 cycles per second) a deep sleep state.

Brainwave Entrainment actually slows down the electrical activity of the brain by using sound tones which effect the sub cortical area of the brain. Flashing lights can also be used for the same effect but can adversly effect people suffering from epilepsy.

The early form of modern brain altering technology was called “binaural beats”. Binaural beats emit sound pulses of different frequencies into each ear. The brain then resonates to a frequency half way though these two frequencies.

Binaural beats are quite effective in lowering our brainwaves but need headphones to work effectively. A more recent innovation in Brainwave Entrainment is “Isochronic Tones” or “Isochronic Beats”. Isochronic Tones (or monaural beats) work without the need for headphones, allowing us a more comfortable way to get to sleep (try turning on your side wearing headphones!)

Benefit of binaural hearingIsochronic Tones can be embedded into music for a total relaxing experience. They have been credited with everything from pain relief, creativity, meditation and lucid dreaming. But the ability of Isochronic Tones to promote restful sleep is their greatest achievement towards good health and wellbeing.

There a many sound products on the market nowadays that claim to help us sleep. Among these are hypnosis CDs which induce relaxation so suggestions can be implanted directly into the subconscious mind, for instance a suggestion that we are calm and relaxed and sleepy.

To benefit from hypnosis, we must be fairly relaxed to start with, which is unlikely if we’re tossing and turning and worrying about not sleeping and how we’re going to perform the following day!

On balance brainwave entrainment using monaural technology or Isochronic Tones looks to be the best option. It seem like our ancestors got it right all those years ago Of course these folk weren’t aware they were using monaural beats technology, they just knew that it worked!

Brainwave entrainment? What in the world is that? It sounds like something from the television show, “Fringe”. Someone kidnaps you, puts electrodes on your head, pumps up the juice and, “BAM!”, you’re under their wicked control! Well, there is some basis for that thinking although it’s a lot more tame. I’m going to explain here just what brainwave entrainment is, how it works and what it’s used for.

First off I’ll give you a quick definition. Basically, brainwave entrainment is when the brain falls into step with an outside stimulus and adjusts it’s brainwaves accordingly.

shutting brain off to sleepFor the most part, this happens when you listen to binaural sounds or watch so called “brain machines”. Both produce the same effect, one’s just auditory and the other visual. Both produce frequencies through light pulses or tones. Your brain perceives these frequencies and gravitates toward them causing the person listening (or watching) to achieve a desired state of being, such as relaxation.

So, how does it work?

As a person is listening to binaural sounds (which are two tone frequencies [no more than 30 Hz apart] that are played at the same time) the brain hears the difference in frequencies and “entrains” itself toward that frequency.

Here’s an example: Say a person is constantly tired and isn’t functioning very well because they have trouble getting into the delta stage of sleep. (The delta stage is that deep, dreamless sleep where your body rejuvenates, heals and repairs itself for the next day.) When this person goes to bed at night, they would listen to binaural sounds, through headphones, that would produce a frequency of 3 or 4 Hz. (In delta sleep, the brain naturally has a frequency of 1-4 Hz.) The brain, then would gravitate toward that frequency and that person will achieve the delta stage of sleep.

Brainwave entrainment is used for different purposes, but the most popular uses are:

  • to achieve mental clarity
  • get laser focus
  • boost creativity
  • increase memory
  • mental rejuvenation

There is a lot more information out there about brainwave entrainment. This article just touches on the surface of what brainwave entrainment is and what it can do for you. I hope this has answered some basic questions for you. Thank you for reading!

Learn how binaural beats were discovered and how you can use them to change your life!

binaural tones

Binaural beats are a form of brain entrainment. This just means they are used to change the brainwave patterns that the brain produces. When brainwave patterns are changed are corresponding change occurs in the emotional state of a person and in their body!

Research has shown that all physical states have corresponding brainwave states. This means that anxiety, stress, emotional distress or any number of negative mental and physical states have certain brainwave patterns associated with them. By using binaural beats you can alleviate the symptoms of these states and even remove them by changing the brainwave pattern associated with them.

Likewise, positive states such as deep relaxation, sleep, calmness etc., also have certain brainwave patterns. It is easy to create these states by using binaural beats.

Experiments have also shown that certain brainwave patterns accelerate learning, emotional growth and remove negative emotions associated with memories, trauma etc..

There are people who have known this for thousands of years and who have practiced their own method for inducing these brainwave patterns. Before binaural beats the only other way to create changes in your brainwave frequencies was through deep meditation. It normally takes over 20 years to learn how to enter these deep states.

Now though, we can have access to these states easily through brain entrainment.

Binaural beats allows anyone to enter deep meditative states within minutes. All you need are stereo headphones and a well chosen brain entrainment track.

It was Heinrich Wilhelm who first discovered binaural beats in 1839. While he was an Associate Professor at the University of Berlin, he discovered that when two similar sounds, which differ only slightly in frequency, are heard separately by the right and left ear a beat type effect is created in the brain. Even though no beat exists the brain interprets the difference between the frequencies of the two sounds and creates the illusion that there is one. These are Binaural Beats.

In 1973 a paper was published titled “Auditory Beats in the Brain” which outlined the findings of Dr. Gerald Oster who investigated the uses of binaural beats.

The report showed how Gerald Oster expanded on Dove’s discovery. Oster discovered that through the use of binaural beats he could alter a subject’s brainwaves to match the beat.

On every occasion the listener’s brainwaves would begin to resonate to the same frequency as the binaural beats. Oster had discovered that by using these beats he could create precise mental and physical states.

Later research has concluded that binaural beats can be used as a method of meditation which brings all the same benefits that traditional meditation does. This means that as well as using them to create relaxation, deep sleep, calmness etc., it can be used as a means for personal, emotional and mental growth. Binaural beats can literally be used to change you from the inside out!
