Brainwave entrainment? What in the world is that? It sounds like something from the television show, “Fringe”. Someone kidnaps you, puts electrodes on your head, pumps up the juice and, “BAM!”, you’re under their wicked control! Well, there is some basis for that thinking although it’s a lot more tame. I’m going to explain here just what brainwave entrainment is, how it works and what it’s used for.

First off I’ll give you a quick definition. Basically, brainwave entrainment is when the brain falls into step with an outside stimulus and adjusts it’s brainwaves accordingly.

shutting brain off to sleepFor the most part, this happens when you listen to binaural sounds or watch so called “brain machines”. Both produce the same effect, one’s just auditory and the other visual. Both produce frequencies through light pulses or tones. Your brain perceives these frequencies and gravitates toward them causing the person listening (or watching) to achieve a desired state of being, such as relaxation.

So, how does it work?

As a person is listening to binaural sounds (which are two tone frequencies [no more than 30 Hz apart] that are played at the same time) the brain hears the difference in frequencies and “entrains” itself toward that frequency.

Here’s an example: Say a person is constantly tired and isn’t functioning very well because they have trouble getting into the delta stage of sleep. (The delta stage is that deep, dreamless sleep where your body rejuvenates, heals and repairs itself for the next day.) When this person goes to bed at night, they would listen to binaural sounds, through headphones, that would produce a frequency of 3 or 4 Hz. (In delta sleep, the brain naturally has a frequency of 1-4 Hz.) The brain, then would gravitate toward that frequency and that person will achieve the delta stage of sleep.

Brainwave entrainment is used for different purposes, but the most popular uses are:

  • to achieve mental clarity
  • get laser focus
  • boost creativity
  • increase memory
  • mental rejuvenation
